How to Choose Conference Giveaways People Actually Keep
Most conference bags are emptied into a hotel bin before the flight home. The items that survive have a few things in common – and none of them is a big budget.
1. Start with the person, not the product
Ask who will receive the gift and what their next 48 hours look like. A delegate who flew in needs something small that fits in hand luggage. A local client visiting your stand can carry a bottle or an umbrella. Staff at an internal kick-off will happily wear a good T-shirt; a banker at a finance summit probably will not.
2. Useful beats clever
The giveaways people keep are the ones they use without thinking: a pen that writes well, a notebook with decent paper, a bottle that does not leak, a charging cable or power bank, a tote bag strong enough for groceries. Novelty items get a smile at the stand and are forgotten by dinner.
3. One good item beats five cheap ones
If the budget is fixed, spend it on fewer, better products. A flimsy pen with your logo tells people something about your brand – just not what you intended. A quality item at a slightly higher unit price is still cheap advertising when it stays on a desk for a year.
4. Keep the branding quiet
People use products they are not embarrassed to be seen with. A small, well-placed logo in one colour often looks more premium – and gets used more – than artwork covering every surface. Add your website only if there is room for it to be read.
5. Think about the trip home
- Liquids, sharp items and large power banks cause trouble at airport security.
- Glass and ceramics break in suitcases; choose metal or plastic for travelling delegates.
- Heavy items add up fast if you are shipping boxes to a venue abroad.
6. Match the giveaway to the moment
Different touchpoints deserve different items: something small and universal at the stand (pens, mints, lanyards), something more considered for booked meetings, and a proper gift for speakers and VIPs. A ready-made bundle covers the basics in one order.
7. Consider the eco option
Bamboo, cork, recycled plastic and organic cotton are now available for almost every classic giveaway. If sustainability is part of your message, your merchandise should not contradict it – see our eco friendly range.
A quick checklist
- Would I keep this myself?
- Will it still work in six months?
- Does it fit in a jacket pocket or a laptop bag?
- Is the logo readable but not shouting?
- Have I ordered early enough? (See our ordering timeline.)
